GEAR COMMUNITY CENTER PROPOSED PROGRAM
FOR NON-COUNSELING SERVICES SURVEY
Ray Davies and The Kinks have returned to a non-concept album format in Sleepwalker. A welcome change indeed. Since the release of the remarkably successful "Lola" in 1970, Ray Davies has been largely engrossed in writing albums only as soundtracks to the groups elaborate stage shows. Sometimes the music suffered on these albums so that it would "fit" with staging and lyrics.
The Kinks old style of rock n' roll has been revived in Sleepwalker. Davies has written several striking tunes for this first album for Arista Records. Of the nine songs presented, all were written, produced and arranged by Davies himself and most seem to be written for and about men.
With the exception of "Mr. Big Man" (which tends to be a flashback of a character from Preservation Acts I and II) each song is original, likable and a direct reflection of Davies' return to writing quality music.
All songs presented here are rock 'n roll oriented with the title track (an abstract homage to male hustling), "Juke Box Music" and "Life On the Road" being the most appealing. "Brother" adds a soulful ballad flavor to the unmistakable Kinks format and in the absence of any politically gay male musicians fills a void for man-to-man music.
Sleepwalker should easily boost the Kink's mediocre record sales of the past several years. It's Ray Davies at his best."
Community Center is finally a reality, we are involved in planning activities
and services which the center will offer.
